It's really incredible to connect to this global network of people that understand such a unique position that I'm in and raised in. It's really interesting to look at myself and how I understand my own self-identity and to connect with others that have gone through that same journey. I think those connections really will help in the future to find a sort of solidarity and common experience together.

It was really exciting for me to be able to come to this adoptee community event…to talk to people who are exactly from your same orphanage, exactly from your same province. It was such a beautiful thing to talk to people who really have experienced it themselves too.

We realize our story is not the only story. It's one amongst many, and when you put all these adoption stories together, it's part of a much bigger, broader story. To be a part of something so much bigger is exciting and honoring. And then to get to know some of the people who are part of that bigger story, it’s really inspiring.

None of my friends were adopted, so this was new to me. I was nervous coming in because I didn't know what to expect. I was met with open arms, and everyone was very open in sharing their experiences. It was nice to know that I wasn't the only one.

From the time we first adopted in 1995 to our second adoption in 2004 up to now 2026 – there's just been a revolution in how the world thinks about adoption. We didn't fully understand during our first adoption how much there is to learn. My favorite statement about adoption is “Adoption is a gift wrapped in sadness.” To really understand that takes a long time and a lot of complexity.

I first worked at Mother's Choice in 1997. Of all the places I've worked in Hong Kong Mother's Choice was the first one. To me that's been very special and the people have been there for me if I needed it.

I didn't have any background on Mother's Choice. Talking to other adoptees and hearing their experiences going back to China and the connections they've made [has been special]. It was intimidating thinking about going back, but now many the adoptees have done this… from visiting the orphanage to meeting foster parents to looking for bio parents. [Mother’s Choice] has built such a structure and resource for all of us to connect that is really helpful.

We want [our daughter] to know that she's not alone, particularly in an Asian American family where adoption isn't necessarily the most prevalent. We can do this, and it doesn't matter what cultural norms [exist] in terms of just a blood relationship. We can love a child regardless.

I'm excited to see what I think is the great base starting level that we can grow into in the future. We've been in touch with over 200 families over the last couple of weeks. Hopefully those 200 families will know one other family that hasn't been connected. We've only touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of the opportunities here, both in the US and around the world. We've laid a foundation. Now, we need to build on it.
